FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is ARTISTA® compatible with fusing glasses from other manufacturers?

Various studies have indicated that combining ARTISTA® glasses with from different manufacturers can result in unacceptably high fusion tensions. Even if smaller applications appear to work out fine, the risk of breakage is quite high as surface sizes increase. Normally, the admissible fusion tension specified for the ARTISTA® product line is exceeded considerably when combined with competitors glasses.

Does ARTISTA® have a tin side?

ARTISTA® is a machine-drawn glass. This means it is extracted vertically from a ceramic nozzle. During no manufacturing step whatsoever does it come into contact with tin! However, the fluorescence of the glass that can be observed during tests with UV lamps (normal or even necessary for float fusing) has to do with the ingredients of the batch. Also see ARTISTA®-News on Fluorescence!

Do I have to use a devitrification spray when fusing with ARTISTA®?

No. Normally, no devitrification spray is needed, because ARTISTA® is extremely devitrification stable. If, however, certain types of surface phenomenon(s) take place following extreme temperature treatments or when a shelf primer that contains pumice powder is used, one should consider whether or not it might be better to sand blast the surfaces and then melt them again using lower temperatures, because conventional devitrification agents either contain lead or cause a low weathering resistance.

Are there any published articles that contain technical content on fusing with ARTISTA®?

Yes, ARTISTA®-News is published at irregular intervals on specific technical topics.

What is the coefficient of expansion for ARTISTA®?

The coefficient of mean linear thermal expansion alpha for ARTISTA® in the temperature range 20°C – 300°C is 94 x 10-7K-1.
Also see Specifications excerpt of thermal properties.

Can fused ARTISTA® be thermally toughened/tempered?

If ARTISTA® Thin Glasses and ARTISTA® Frits are used, thermal toughening/tempering is generally possible.
Our experiences are discussed in one edition of ARTISTA®-News.

Where do the cooling temperatures range for ARTISTA®?

Also see our Specifications excerpt of thermal properties.

Can ARTISTA® be fused with OPALIKA® or IMERA®?

Fusing with OPALIKA® (White Flashed Opal Glass) is possible because the clear basic glass is quite similar to the clear ARTISTA®. However, there are a few things to be taken into consideration.

The situation is more difficult with IMERA®. Whereas we guarantee, of course, compatibility for ARTISTA®, this is not the case with IMERA®. Due to the manufacturing-related changes in products inside the melting tanks, we pay the most attention to complying with transmission and color with IMERA. Linear expansion and viscosity may occasionally match that of ARTISTA, but not necessarily.
