Founded in the early 1950s, SCHOTT in Mainz is not only home to the headquarters of the SCHOTT Group, but also the management team of Advanced Optics and other international key departments, like Sales for Europe, Quality Management, Marketing, and Logistics, are based in Mainz.

Moreover, Mainz is the lead site when it comes to development, glass melting and research & technology and processing of optical glass, optical filter glass and ZERODUR®. In fact, most of the glass types are developed here.

In addition to its melting facilities for optical glass and various types of optical filter glasses, Mainz is also important for the development of metrology. Furthermore, the Center of Excellence for ZERODUR® melting and processing is based here.

Mainz employs approx. 280 employees.

1952 The company is rebuilt in Mainz and plant becomes headquarter and main production site of the SCHOTT Group

1966 First casting of Fluor-phosphate-glasses

1969 Optical glasses from SCHOTT in television and photo cameras delivered spectacular photos and television images of "Apollo 11", when Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first human beings to walk on the moon.

1973 Starting the production of ZERODUR®, casting of the 4 meter ZERODUR®-mirror

1989 Opening of the Otto Schott Research Center

1991 Manufacturing of ZERODUR® telescope mirror substrates with a diameter of 8.2 meters for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile

1993 i-line Glasses for micro-lithography

2002 Last “Hafenschmelze”

2016 Casting of monolithic 39 meter ZERODUR® mirror for future-leading project E-ELT
