SCHOTT in Grünenplan, Germany
History
|
|
In 1930, the former "Jenaer Glaswerke SCHOTT & Gen." acquired 80% of the shares in "Deutsche Spiegelglas AG," a company that was based in Grünenplan, Lower Saxony, whose history dates back to the year 1744. This made it the oldest glass manufacturing plant in the industry in Lower Saxony. The plant located at the site in Grünenplan became a subsidiary of the SCHOTT Group when the foundation company SCHOTT was reconstructed in Mainz in 1952. When SCHOTT acquired the remaining shares in 2002, the company based in Grünenplan (which was called SCHOTT Desag at the time) merged with other SCHOTT sites to form SCHOTT Spezialglas GmbH. It finally became part of SCHOTT AG in 2004.
Today, Grünenplan with its approx. 500 employees is one of five sites that make up the Advanced Optics division’s global manufacturing network.

The site in Eschershausen manufactures a broad range of future-oriented special glasses and components for the Electronics & Biotech, Architecture & Design and Customized Solutions (technical applications) markets. The Grünenplan site is an internationally recognized center for the manufacturing and processing of thin and ultrathin glasses and the production of anti-reflective coatings for flat glass. The Grünenplan production site is of immense importance to the Advanced Optics and Architecture & Design divisions.
The product portfolio includes:
-
Thin glass (as a base glass for MEMS wafers (AF 32® eco) or as substrate glass for interference filters in cell phone camera modules (D 263® T eco)) for example), but also the ultrathin Microsheet glass
-
Highly transparent flat glass (for touchpanels or digital projection (B 270®), for example)
-
Glass wafers & substrates (for electronic (MEMS) or optical applications (Micro Optics), for example
-
MEMpax® ultrathin borosilicate glass
-
Filter glasses (special UV filter glasses for solariums, for example)
-
Microscopy glasses (D 263® M cover glass and MICROCROWN microscope slides)
-
Optical signal glasses (for airline, rail and road traffic)
-
Radiation shielding glasses
-
Anti-reflective glasses for shop windows (AMIRAN®), display boards (CONTURAN®) and picture framing/museum showcases (MIROGARD®),
-
Decorative glasses (z.B. ARTISTA®, IMERA® and OPALIKA®, for example)
-
Restoration glasses (z.B. TIKANA® and RESTOVER®), for example, but also
-
Color effect glasses NARIMA® and MIRONA®
