SCHOTT in Mainz, Germany
History
|
After the original Jena factory was expropriated in 1948 and converted into a state-owned company, the SCHOTT Group re-established itself in 1952, selecting Mainz as the location of its new headquarters.
At this time, the first melting of optical glass took place in Mainz, setting the foundation for SCHOTT’s Optics Division. In 1968, the Division developed ZERODUR®, a zero-expansion glass ceramic with outstanding properties.
A year later, the Optics Division started its first non-European production site in Duryea, Pennsylvania, USA. It furthered its global expansion and set up its first Asian manufacturing subsidiary in Penang, Malaysia in 1974.
To date, Mainz remains to be the headquarters of Advanced Optics and the key manufacturing and technology centre for the business segment.
