Interference Filters
Product Information
|
 |
|
Interference filters use the interference effect to transmit or reflect certain spectral ranges of electromagnetic radiation. Hereto, numerous thin layers with differing refractive indices are brought up to a substrate. The optical thicknesses of these layers are usually a quarter of a given wavelength or a multiple thereof.
Our established standard program of bandpass interference filters has been upgraded and represents state-of-the-art technology. To a greater extent, multi-cavity filters are included; these possess much steeper curves and demonstrate better blocking properties in adjacent ranges.
Filters with hard thin film coatings form another part of our total production program. SCHOTT Advanced Optics employs two processes for producing such hard coatings, namely reactive evaporation and reactive ion plating. Both processes produce very durable thin coatings. In general, no additional protection is needed.
Filters with so-called soft coatings have to be protected additionally from damage or humidity. This is usually done by supplementary cementing with suitable glass. The coatings of the interference filters (hard and soft) are manufactured by the process of vapor-deposition under high vacuum.
The program is rounded off by a number of special filters and filters that have proved themselves over many years, e.g. VERIL linear variable filters, and the low-fluorescening, sharp cut-on, glass-plastic laminated filters of the type KV.

Benefits
|
SCHOTT Advanced Optics provides exclusive high quality interference coatings. Together with an experienced team of sales and application engineers, we work in close co-operation with our customers to ensure that pre-determined specifications are closely adhered to so as to achieve the most optimal customized products.
No standard filter program can possibly be expected to solve every problem satisfactorily. Filters with special properties are often required to solve specific application problems. We therefore offer strong technical support to develop custom-made filters with specific properties, such as spectral values, dimensions, special surface properties, thermal stability, increased stability against environmental influences and others. Please contact us for further information.

Materials Used
|
We select the most suitable from a wide range of available evaporative materials to provide the best possible interference filter solution.
Almost all inorganic glasses and glass ceramics are suitable for use as substrates for interference filters. The choice of substrate is highly dependent on the specific requirements placed upon the finished interference filter. Examples of materials which we can coat include:
- Optical glass
- Borosilicate glass (BOROFLOAT® 33)
- Fused silica LITHOSIL®
- Optical filter glass (color filter glass)
- Glass ceramic (such as ZERODUR® glass ceramic)
- Technical glass

Forms of Supply
|
Most of the interference filters are produced based on our customers' pre-determined specifications.
|
Specifications
|
We can typically supply filters smaller than 1x1 mm to about 400 mm in diameter. Specifications listed in our Interference Filters and Special Filters catalogue apply to our standard interference filters.
Customers can also approach our sales and application engineering teams for support with regards to specifications for customized interference filters.

Quality Assurance
|
From the uncoated substrate to the finished interference filter which may consist of several different individual filters, we continuously monitor both optical and non-optical properties with a wide range of high quality equipment. We select the instrumentation that is most suited for the task, in many cases after detailed consultation with the customer.
