Optical Glass

Product Information

Optical Glass

For more than 120 years, SCHOTT Advanced Optics has been offering a large portfolio of high quality optical glasses to meet the needs of a broad variety of optical applications as well as industrial applications, ranging from consumer products to optical systems at the leading edge of research.

We aim to meet future market requirements by providing new optical glasses for rapidly growing market-oriented innovations, and utilizing new melting processes to ensure economical and timely production. Our range of optical glasses includes arsenic free N-glasses, glasses suitable for precision molding (low Tg glass) as well as classical glass types with lead oxide as an essential component for outstanding optical properties.

Our latest list of preferred glasses includes about 115 glass types which are classified into glass groups based upon similar chemical composition (and hence optical position) and are illustrated in a
nd-vd diagram.

Benefits

Since 1884, SCHOTT has been the pioneer of the scientific development of optical glass. SCHOTT continues the legacy of Mr Otto Schott with a dedicated team of optical glass specialists to provide excellent application support and expertise.

SCHOTT optical glass is also well known for the high levels of product quality due to stringent quality control procedures.

Key Applications

Optical glass is used in a wide variety of applications in both consumer and industrial areas, such as:

1. Consumer
  • Imaging-related devices like digital still cameras and video cameras, interchangeable camera lenses
  • Binoculars and spotting scopes
  • Digital projectors
2. Industrial
  • Microscopy
  • Medical engineering
  • Laser fusion
  • Geodesy
  • Reprographics
  • Professional image processing

Forms of Supply

SCHOTT Advanced Optics' optical glass is available as:
  • Fine-annealed optical glass with up to five non-machined, as-cast surfaces
  • Cut blanks in accordance with SCHOTT's standard properties and tolerances; tighter requirements can also be discussed
  • Pressings

Specifications

Optical glasses are specified according to their optical and internal properties. These include:

Optical Properties: Internal Properties:
  • Refractive index with tolerances
  • Striae
  • Abbe value with tolerances
  • Bubbles and inclusions
  • Refractive index homogeneity
  • Stress birefringence
  • Internal transmission
  • Color code

  • Unless specifically requested, the glass will be delivered in refractive index/Abbe number step 3/4 with a standard test report. The refractive index of all parts of a lot will not deviate by more than ±1 x 10-4 (± 2 x 10-4 for pressing, if requested) from the test report.

A detailed description of the properties is available in the Data Sheet catalogue .

    Quality Assurance

SCHOTT is both ISO 9001 and 14001 certified and can be your trusted partner. Our optical glass is subjected to stringent quality inspection before delivery. The production of optical glass is continuously monitored at all stages in addition to an elaborate final inspection.

Delivery lots are tested for refractive index scattering, stress birefringence, striae and bubbles according to DIN ISO 10110. A test certificate in accordance with DIN EN 10204 documents the standard supply quality. On request we can also supply test certificates with increased accuracy. For high homogeneous cut blanks we confirm homogeneity by interferometry.
