Radiation Resistant Glass

Product Information

SCHOTT Advanced Optics offers a variety of radiation resistant glass types covering main parts of the Abbe diagram. These glass-types are suitable for earth orbit based applications with lifetimes of up to 10 years.

Optical glass can be stabilized against transmittance loss caused by ionizing radiation by adding cerium (Cer) to the composition. The added Cer changes the intrinsic color of the glass. The transmittance edge is shifted to longer wavelength. In general the cerium content is kept low enough to keep this effect small. In general, the higher the cerium content, the more the glass is stabilized against higher total doses, but the more the intrinsic transmittance is reduced. In addition, the impact on the color change due to the addition of cerium depends on the glass matrix.

Some glass types are stabilized with a high amount of cerium and are therefore especially suitable for use in surroundings with very high radiation.

Benefits

SCHOTT Advanced Optics offers radiation resistant glass of high internal quality. The glasses can also be polished to high accuracy and are easily coated.

Key Applications

Radiation resistant glasses are mostly used in space-based applications.

Forms of Supply

Radiation resistant glasses are available upon inquiry, in forms such as cut blanks, discs, rectangular blocks, and rods ranging from a few mm up to 150 mm.

With our modern CNC processing equipment and variety of grinding technologies, we are also able to supply complex geometries at the customer's request.

Quality Assurance

We conduct 100% inspection for dimensional and internal quality. We also utilize roughness measurement equipment for the inspection of surface quality, accurate measurement microscopes and stress measurement setups according to the "de Senarmont" method for the examination of internal quality, as well as an interferometer with aperture up to 24 inches in diameter for the review of optical homogeneity.
