History

1884:


Dr. Otto Schott

Prof. Dr. Ernst Abbe
Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe, Carl and Roderich Zeiss found the Glastechnische Laboratorium SCHOTT & Genossen ( later: Jenaer Glaswerk SCHOTT & Genossen) in Jena, Germany.

1889:

Ernst Abbe founds the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation.

1891/1919:

The Jenaer Glaswerk becomes a foundation company. Sole owner: Carl-Zeiss-Foundation

1948:

Expropriation of the parent plant in Jena (Soviet occupation zone/German Democratic Republic) and conversion into a nationalized enterprise (VEB).

1952:

After Germany is divided, the foundation company is reorganized in Mainz (Federal Republic of Germany). Mainz becomes the headquarters of the SCHOTT Group.

1991/1995:

Following German reunification, SCHOTT Glaswerke, Mainz takes over the business interests of the Jenaer Glaswerk at the site of the company’s founding in Jena.

2004:

Conversion of the foundation entreprise to SCHOTT AG. Its sole shareholder is the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung.

2009:

125 year anniversary of SCHOTT

SCHOTT - Technological Milestones

1884:

Otto SCHOTT develops optical glass with completely new optical properties and bases glass production on scientific principles for the first time.

1887/93:

Invention by Otto SCHOTT of chemically resistant borosilicate glass that is able to withstand high temperatures.

1925:

The German Glass Engineering Society honors Otto SCHOTT as the “Founder of modern glass technology.”

1936:

Manual production of the world’s first television funnel.

1968:

SCHOTT’s ZERODUR® glass-ceramic introduces a new era of telescope mirror substrates for astronomy.

1974:


CERAN® glass-ceramic cooking surfaces make their way into kitchens worldwide.

1991:


The world’s largest glass monolith produced in the centrifugal casting process: A ZERODUR® telescope mirror substrate with a diameter of 8.2 meters (approximately 26 feet 8 inches).

1993:

Advances in flat display technology made possible by glass with thicknesses as thin as 0.03 mm.

1994/96:

Borosilicate float glass products PYRAN® and PYRANOVA® set new standards in fire resistant glazing.

1996:

Transfer of SCHOTT coating technology for halogen lamp reflectors (PICVD-process) to the inside coating for glass pharmaceutical packaging.

1998:

SCHOTT becomes complete supplier of high-tech optical materials for chip manufacturing.

2001:

Entry into photovoltaics

2004:

Backlighting glass tubes, used for background illumination of displays

2005:

Market launch of solar receivers

2008:

Nomination of the solar receiver as one of three very important innovations for the German Future Prize by German's Federal President Horst Köhler.
