01-27-2009, SCHOTT North America, Inc. SCHOTT Doubles Fiber Optic Faceplate Image Size to 300 Sq. Millimeters |
New Faceplates Suitable for Large Format Medical, Military and Commercial Applications
January 27, 2009 (at SPIE Photonics West- San Jose, Calif.)—SCHOTT’s Fiber Optics business (Booth #809) has increased the capacity of one-piece fiber optic faceplates to an image area of up to 300 sq. millimeters, the company announced at SPIE Photonics West today. Prior to this increase, the maximum image size was only 150 sq. millimeters. These new faceplate products are intended to serve two distinct markets, medical X-ray, and displays for commercial and defense applications.
SCHOTT’s Fiber Optics business will draw on its present glass catalog, consisting of many numerical apertures from 0.35 to 1.0, to offer customized light control solutions for defense and commercial display industry customers. The faceplates can be positioned both over an LCD, to exclude ambient light, and between a backlight and LCD to control light emission.
For the medical X-ray market, SCHOTT offers a one-piece faceplate customized for large format applications which, when combined with SCHOTT’s series 47 glass, offers both X-ray blocking as well as lower solarization properties over other traditional fiber optic glasses.
“With a growing demand for larger image areas for instruments of all kinds, we believe the new, larger SCHOTT optic faceplates will be a welcome addition to the optical components product space,” said Michael Dargee, Applications Engineering with SCHOTT’s Fiber Optics business.
