SCHOTT Introduces PYRAN® Platinum Fire-Rated Glass Ceramic at AIA
Fire- and Safety Rated Glass-Ceramic Ideal for Door Lites, Sidelites, Transoms and Windows
April 30, 2009 (at American Institute of Architects Conference and Exposition in San Francisco, Booth 4847) —SCHOTT presented its new PYRAN® Platinum fire-rated glass-ceramic products at the Moscone Center here, today, which are now readily available in North America. These environmentally friendly glass-ceramic panels have optimal clarity offering new aesthetic solutions to designers needing to address fire- and impact-safety in building code-regulated locations.

For transoms and windows, PYRAN® Platinum, along with the PYRAN® Platinum F and PYRAN® Platinum L product lines for safety-rated locations such as doors and sidelites, are UL classified and meet the necessary test standards including the required hose stream test. They are made by a revolutionary manufacturing process, which yields a near-optical surface quality, eliminating the need for polishing. PYRAN® Platinum is rated up to 90 minutes, while PYRAN® Platinum F and L are rated up to three hours in doors. The PYRAN® Platinum F and L products also conform to positive pressure test standards set by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., for the United States and Canada.

The PYRAN® Platinum products are manufactured without the use of environmentally hazardous toxins.

“Many fire-rated window solutions are marred by wires or unwanted tints,” said Peter Langer, Sales Manager for Fire-Rated Glass in North America. “With the PYRAN® Platinum glass-ceramic panels, designers can incorporate the clarity and transparency wanted for optimal design, while still maintaining the highest standards in fire safety.”

PYRAN® Platinum fire-rated glazing material is a transparent glass-ceramic with a thickness of 3/16” (5mm) and weighs 2.5 lbs/ft2.

PYRAN® Platinum F is not only fire-rated, it is impact-rated and meets ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 12CFR1201 (Categories I and II). The filmed, transparent glass-ceramic is 3/16” (5mm) thick, weighs 2.5 lbs/ft2.

PYRAN® Platinum L safety and fire-rated products are also fire and impact rated meeting ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16CFR1201 (Categories I and II). This laminated glass-ceramic has a thickness of approximately 3/8” (9mm) and weighs 4.0 lbs/ft2. “Now, SCHOTT products can now provide the safety required for a given project, without sacrificing a designer’s vision” said Peter Langer. “For fire-rated locations, this is an excellent solution.”
