SCHOTT expands its range of highly resistant sealing glasses for use in fuel cells
The broad range of high-performance sealants now also includes strontium- and barium-free glass solders for low- and medium-temperature SOFCs
The international technology group SCHOTT offers a broad range of sealing glasses for use in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). These glass solders help to hermetically seal cells and stacks that consist of metallic and ceramic compounds. They are used with nearly all types of fuel cells and provide significant advantages, especially for high-temperature SOFCs, due to their high resistance to heat. Strontium- and barium-free sealing glasses have now been added to the product line. These can be applied to metal alloys that contain a share of chromium and are thus also suited for use in low- and medium-temperature fuel cells. Sealing glass stands up to the harsh environmental conditions and high operating temperatures inside fuel cells and thus contributes to their durability. SCHOTT has been developing glass and glass-ceramic sealing glasses for use in fuel cell technology for 25 years and ranks as a world-leading manufacturer of glass solders. The company will be presenting its materials at the Asian SOFC Symposium in Busan, South Korea, from September 21 to 24, 2014. More

HelioJet SpectrumCC (Color Control) with its unique True Color Sensor emits life-long homogeneous colored light
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and Lufthansa Technik (LHT) have signed a contract for the installation of the HelioJet LED lighting system, designed and developed in cooperation between the specialty glass expert and lighting specialist SCHOTT and LHT. As the first to place an order for the new aircraft cabin LED lighting system, SAS is the launching customer for HelioJet. The installation is part of a comprehensive cabin modification program for seven A330 and A340 aircraft which SAS will execute over the next months. 13th Otto Schott Research Award presented to Professor Donald B. Dingwell / Research provides important insights for industrial glass melting processes
Professor Donald Bruce Dingwell is the winner of the 13th Otto Schott Research Award valued at 25,000 euros. The Canadian experimental volcanologist has headed the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology at the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) in Munich (Germany) since 2000 and is Director of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Dingwell received the award for his many years of research in the field of physical and chemical properties of volcanic glasses. “His work on glass formation under extreme conditions like those that occur during volcanic activity provides us with valuable insights for use in industrial glass melting,” noted Dr. Hans-Joachim Konz, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ernst Abbe Fund and Member of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG, during the award ceremony that was held at an international conference on glass technology in Aachen. SCHOTT North America, Heliae, and Arizona State University (ASU) today announced a partnership to bring Heliae’s algae production technology to ASU’s algae testbed facility. Through the partnership, SCHOTT, a global leader in glass innovation, financed a HelixTM photobioreactor built by Heliae and installed at ASU’s Department of Energy (DOE)-funded algae testbed facility on its Polytechnic campus. Over the next several years, algae research staff at ASU will leverage the HelixTM photobioreactor for pioneering research that will forward the understanding of algae production technology, including an investigation into the effect of glass tubing innovation on the yields and economics of algae production. The reactor will also deliver the production of high-quality algae cultures, which will support broader ASU algae operations. More

The latest innovation called CONTURAX® UV features cavities designed to accommodate ultraviolet (UV) lamps.
