This year marks the second year of observance of MFG Day, which is spearheaded by the National Association of Manufacturers. It is held on the first Friday of October, and allows U.S. manufacturers to open their doors to the community to offer a first-hand look at the state of modern manufacturing. The SCHOTT employees in Lebanon led a series of tours and presentations for local high school students, family members, and neighboring businesses, as well as Pennsylvania State Representative RoseMarie Swanger, to showcase the breadth of the pharmaceutical packaging industry and stir up interest in manufacturing careers.

“We joined manufacturing companies across America to exhibit our growing operations to the local community, while also illustrating the larger opportunities in U.S. manufacturing now that the sector is growing again,” said Chris Sellards, General Manager at SCHOTT’s Pharmaceutical Packaging Division in Lebanon. “But one major hurdle that stands in the way of continued growth is hiring skilled workers. Often, manufacturing jobs are pegged as antiquated and low-skilled work, and this stigma slims down the applicant pool. In reality, manufacturing jobs require highly skilled employees who operate cutting-edge machinery for competitive wages. MFG Day provides manufacturers an opportunity to dispel the industry’s myths and spark interest in the field among younger generations.”

Sellards, Steve Manz, Vials Forming Production Manager, Valerie Stevenson, Vials Visual Inspection and Packaging Manager, and Kris Koch, Syringe Operations Manager, led tours to provide an overview of the pharmaceutical packaging plant, showcasing the stages of vial and syringe production—including glass forming, visual inspection, the syringe wash line, and packing.

SCHOTT employees’ poster sessions highlighted various pharmaceutical packaging manufacturing processes, such as the electro-mechanic technician apprenticeship program which has recently been certified by the state of Pennsylvania, the plant’s lean philosophy, safety, vial engineering projects, syringe engineering projects, preventative maintenance, and manufacturing execution systems.
