Aspherical Lens Caps Join the SCHOTT Electronic Packaging Product Suite

Introduced to the North American Market at SPIE Photonics West Exhibition, the customizable caps with optical properties use proprietary low Tg glasses

Jan. 24, 2009 (At SPIE Photonics West-San Jose, Calif.)—SCHOTT’s Electronic Packaging business (Booth #809) unveiled its new line of Aspherical Lens Caps today, designed to give its international data and telecommunications customers a total optical solutions suite from a single manufacturer, to the North American market at the SPIE Photonics West Exhibition.

These new products seal a low Tg glass molded asphere (typically a TO cap) into a machined body, using proven, established, low-temperature solder glass technology. They are customizable to customer’s specific requirements, using minimal mold tooling adaptation or modifications. In addition, they give customers access to a variety of SCHOTT’s proprietary low Tg glasses for their optical designs, as well as personalized technical support.

“Aspherical Lens Caps round off SCHOTT’s range of products, which include: TO headers, TO caps and microelectronic packages based on glass-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal sealing technologies,” said Rohit Bhosale, R&D Manager of the Opto-Electronics Division at SCHOTT Electronic Packaging Asia in Singapore.

“Our industrial customers are increasingly seeking to take advantage of the synergies that arise from one-stop shopping, as well as SCHOTT’s expertise in hermetic sealing and optical glass. So the decision was only natural to add high quality molded aspheres sealed with low temperature solder glass.”

SCHOTT is in the unique position of being able to present a one-stop shopping experience, he explained, offering high quality products, localized technical support, and expertise in materials science and applications engineering. The company is vertically integrated, from materials development to manufacturing and processing.

As a business unit of SCHOTT, Electronic Packaging is a leading manufacturer of housings and other components for the reliable, long-term protection for sensitive electronics. The core technologies are glass-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal sealing, thermal sensing components as well as a variety of cutting edge specialty glass competences. With 1,500 employees at four production locations and several competence centers around the world, local customer support and co-developments for individual packaging solutions are at the heart of the business, serving the world’s leading manufacturers in the automotive, data- and telecommunication, sensors and semiconductors, consumer electronics, dental care, home appliances, laser as well as security and tracking industries.
