SCHOTT to Showcase Technical Expertise in Product Design, Analysis at Photonics West

Lighting and Imaging team will highlight how close partnerships reduce qualifying time for devices
Much goes into developing a medical device that’s safe, effective, and cost-efficient to produce, and international technology group SCHOTT is increasingly partnering with manufacturers to improve the process. As expectations rise and many manufacturers dedicate their resources on their strengths, SCHOTT’s Lighting and Imaging group is providing analysis, testing, and guidance to ensure smooth regulatory approvals and efficient production in conformity with international standards. Experts from the SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging team will be available to meet with medical device manufacturers at the SPIE Photonics West conference, February 16 to 18, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco (Hall B, booth #1314).

SCHOTT has a long history of collaborating with device manufacturers across the medical device spectrum, from dental and surgical instruments to clinical diagnostic tools. Many of these manufacturers have shifted in-house materials and design experts to concentrate on their core competences, and SCHOTT’s Lighting and Imaging team is filling the gap.

SCHOTT conducts material analysis, optical design review, mechanical design analysis, thermal modeling, electronic modeling, testing, and inspection for device makers. Based on this analysis, SCHOTT can make recommendations on light sources, lenses, materials, and other components, as well as overall design that make a device more effective and more cost-efficient to manufacture.

A full material analysis and testing regimen reduces the potential of cost overruns and difficult regulatory approvals, especially as manufacturers work on aggressive time-to-market schedules. Close collaboration between partners speeds the road to qualifying new products, which is critical for manufacturers seeking qualification for multiple products at once to meet competitive market pressures.

“Winning the science is only half the battle,” said Anthony Cappabianca, Business Manager Medical with SCHOTT North America. “For SCHOTT, the more important half is optimizing the utility and usability of a device while making it cost competitive to manufacture. The SCHOTT team enters every product review with a simple question in mind: What can be improved? The answer helps device manufacturers develop a roadmap from design to testing to rapidly qualifying their products.”

SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging designs and manufactures optical fibers, LEDs, and other hybrid lighting solutions for a wide range of markets, including automotive, aviation, defense, microscopy, and medical. Its technologies include fiber optic light guides, LED lighting in aircraft cabins, and infrared sensors.
