Security & Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID)

Reed switches are perfect anti-theft devices. These small switches consist of a pair of contacts on ferrous metal reeds in a hermetically-sealed glass envelope. By applying a magnetic field, the electrical circuit can either be opened or closed. Installed and integrated into a security system, these switches invisibly activate the alarm when an unauthorized entry through the door or window is detected.

SCHOTT's glass tubing technology, used for the production of reed switches is similarly applied for the encapsulation of transponders. A transponder is a device that automatically responds to a specific radio-frequency (via RFID chips) and is used for tracking and identifying goods in logistics. The use of biocompatible glass 8625 even allows one to implant transponders as identification systems for pets and livestock.
