Rechargeable energy storage sets the stage for numerous applications. Lithium-ion technology is currently the most powerful solution for e-mobility and stationary applications in the field of renewable energies. In order to provide a steady and long-lasting performance, energy storage devices need to be hermetically encapsulated.
High power capacitors are typically encased in a light and stable aluminum cell. The battery terminals typically represent the weak point of these cells, as they need to facilitate the conduction of electrical power through the hermetically sealed housing walls.
To achieve long-term hermeticity of the battery or capacitor, the materials for insulating the terminals must fulfill two key criteria:
While standard polymer sealing materials may often fail to meet these requirements in long-term operation due to their organic nature, SCHOTT’s glass-to-aluminium sealing technology for battery terminals has been developed to enable a cell design with durable hermeticity. The specially selected glass type is highly resistant to lithium electrolytes and HF as well as high temperatures.

With their high energy density, lithium-ion batteries and capacitors are already widely in use in consumer electronics. As the product life cycles are very short (usually less than 3 years), simple pouch cells made from organic plastic are considered sufficient; this material, however, ages naturally at the cost of its hermeticity and security. For applications requiring increased battery lifespan, as in e-mobility or in the wind and solar technology, for example, materials with significantly enhanced durability are necessary. These are provided by SCHOTT with its glass-to-aluminum sealed battery lid systems.
Since the 1930s, SCHOTT has been manufacturing hermetic housings using its Glass-to-Metal Sealing Technology (GTMS). This technology is well-proven in sealing battery covers of lithium thionyl chloride (Li-SOCl2) batteries. Based on more than 20 years of sealing experience for primary batteries, the innovative glass-to-aluminum sealing technology was specifically designed for long-lasting lithium-ion batteries and capacitors.
