Rechargeable energy storage sets the stage for numerous applications. Lithium-ion technology is currently the most powerful solution for e-mobility and stationary applications in the field of renewable energies. In order to provide a steady and long-lasting performance, energy storage devices need to be hermetically encapsulated.

High power capacitors are typically encased in a light and stable aluminum cell. The battery terminals typically represent the weak point of these cells, as they need to facilitate the conduction of electrical power through the hermetically sealed housing walls.

To achieve long-term hermeticity of the battery or capacitor, the materials for insulating the terminals must fulfill two key criteria:
  • long-term stability at high temperatures and temperature changes
  • reliable resistance against chemical corrosion

While standard polymer sealing materials may often fail to meet these requirements in long-term operation due to their organic nature, SCHOTT’s glass-to-aluminium sealing technology for battery terminals has been developed to enable a cell design with durable hermeticity. The specially selected glass type is highly resistant to lithium electrolytes and HF as well as high temperatures.
