Two in one sweep

Sophisticated experts have already invented what is so urgently required for tomorrow. Advanced Biological Nutrient Recovery technology (ABNR™) invented by CLEARAS Water Recovery enables effective purification of industrial, municipal and agricultural wastewater streams to best-in-class levels. The technology primarily enables nutrient recovery, addressing one of the wastewater industries largest pain points, phosphorus and nitrogen recovery. At the core of the technology are closed photo-bioreactors which allow for maximum biological activity and uptake of nutrients, outperforming conventional chemical options – without leaving any toxic slurries.

The “stars“ are green

The real “stars“ of the recovery process are diligent algae. In light-flooded, robust photobioreactors they find perfect working conditions to accelerate their photosynthesis - around-the-clock, 24/7. In the greenhouse structure with kilometers of high-quality DURAN® glass tubes from SCHOTT, they continuously break down nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon dioxide and other undesirable pollutants. The results of their great work: purified water, waste stream recycling and valuable biomass.

In scratch-resistant glass tubes algae can grow perfectly.

A clear solution

Blend Phase

Contaminated wastewater and CO2 are mixed with algae and other biological organisms to create a biodiverse Mixture Flow.

Nutrient Recovery Phase

The Mixture Flow enters the vertical pond system. Its greenhouse structure provides light for year-round, 24/7 nutrient recovery and optimizes biological activities in photosynthesis. The algae inside metabolize nitrogen, phosphorous, CO2 and other unwanted contaminants. By this it biologically cleans the water, releasing oxygen.

Separation Phase

Advanced microfiltration separates the Mixture Flow in two different streams: clean water and recycle stream. The clean water is free from harmful contaminants and can be discharged or reused in a number of ways for operationals efficiency adn additional revenue opportunities. The recycle stream sends healthy Return Activated Algae to receive new wastewater starting the treatment cycle over again. Excess Waste Activated Algae is harvested from the treatment algae.

From waste to value

To this point, over 100 million gallons of wastewater effluent have been treated in ABNR™ installations in the U.S. The largest installation to date will go into operation in Fall of 2018: It will produce 4 MGD (million gallon per day) of the highest quality reuse water, 18,000 lbs of recycled CO2 per day, and 8,000 lbs of algae biomass daily for sale as a bioplastics feedstock. Biomass, an additional income for wastewater plants, can be sourced into a variety of global markets including plastics, feeds, specialty chemicals, and soil enhancement.
