Glass and glass-ceramics are high-temperature materials unaffected by temperature shocks and chemical attacks. With thermal expansion near zero, they retain their shape even under extreme conditions.

for new functionalities. Special high-end coatings on glass and glass-ceramic allow for
extreme resistance, e.g. from scratches. Other functions can also be achieved by

durability and longevity of materials crucially important. Specialty glass is a material
that rises to the challenge. In lithium-ion batteries, for example, specialty glass can be
used as a sealing material to hermetically encapsulate the unit and support reliable,
long-term functionality. Functional glass powder, which can scavenge harmful hydrofluoric acid,
also contributes to longer lifespans and increased battery safety. Energy densities can also be
increased, however, by using innovative ion-conducting glass-ceramics, such as in advanced
lithium solid-state batteries.
