SCHOTT develops, manufactures and sells in-seat reading lights for Business and First Class aircraft seats. The Business Unit Fiber Optics created this market with products based on fiber optics technology about ten years ago and has been the sole supplier to the industry during the first years. The market structure as well as the products saw a dramatic change when white LED’s became available for this application. Through its technical expertise, its “urge for innovation” and its high level of flexibility, which has been proven in joint projects with leading seat makers, SCHOTT managed to retain a significant share in an increasingly competitive market, which shifted almost completely to LED-based products.
