SCHOTT TO 56 PLUS® Addresses Growing Demand for 10 G Technologies
SCHOTT will be highlighting the benefits of its TO 56 PLUS® for high frequency, edge emitting laser, Long Range Module (LRMs), 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) and 10 Gbps Uncooled Transmitter Optical Sub Assembly (TOSA) applications at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) this week.

An improvement of the industry-standard 2- to 3-pin TO 56, the TO 56 PLUS® can have as many as 6 pins, along with higher frequency and DC (electrical) ports. This allows the customers to package most of the necessary electronics into a regular TO footprint for a 10G or higher data rate application, rather than resorting to bulky and more expensive hybrid packages. Along with these additional pins, the SCHOTT TO 56 PLUS® features excellent RF performance, edge emitting application optimization, and a footprint that is ideal for new 10 G LRM applications.

Electronics manufacturers can use the TO 56 PLUS® without having to update or alter their welding machines, bonders, fiber couplings and other production line equipment. In addition, current opto-caps, lenses and other related technologies are compatible with the TO 56 PLUS®.

“As the number of 10-Gigabit applications increases, so too does the demand for transistor outlines that can support high frequency applications and more I/O.” said Hermann Ditz, Executive Vice President, SCHOTT Electronic Packaging (EP) business unit. “As a successor to the industry standard TO 56, the TO 56 PLUS® provides electronics manufacturers with the 10-Gigabit capabilities they need without forcing them to retool their entire production line.” With the TO 56 PLUS®, electronics manufacturers can choose their own mode for attaching connectors.

A specialist in simulation and measuring technology, SCHOTT provides its customers with in-depth consultation services on everything from design development to final assembly, helping ensure that the SCHOTT TO 56 PLUS® fully addresses its customers’ application requirements.
