SCHOTT to Showcase PURAVIS® GOF120 Optical Fiber with Aperture Angle of Up to 120 Degrees
SCHOTT will display its entire optical fiber portfolio at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons 2015 Annual Meeting
The technology group SCHOTT will showcase its portfolio of glass optical fibers for medical applications at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in Las Vegas on March 25-27, 2015 (booth #6749). Among those components on display are SCHOTT’s lead-free PURAVIS® step index fibers for illumination applications, including the newest addition, the GOF120 fiber. This new glass fiber achieves an aperture angle of up to 120 degrees with an aperture of 0.86, making it well-suited for applications in the field of medical endoscopy to illuminate internal cavities.

“Medical professionals are increasingly stressing the importance of preventative medicine, and PURAVIS optical fibers enable them to better examine patients for potential ailments,” said Karen Holst, Product Manager for optical glass fibers at SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging. “Medical devices with PURAVIS GOF120, for example, allow doctors and nurses to make exact diagnoses when testing tissue samples because they offer high light transmission while maintaining a natural white light appearance.”
Like its two sister fibers GOF70 and GOF85, the GOF120 fiber improves blue light and near-ultraviolet transmission. As a result, these fibers can assist in the most advanced disciplines of medical technology, such as fluorescence diagnostics.
The special glass formula used in creating SCHOTT fibers features an improved resistance class, ensuring all PURAVIS fibers offer greater long-term stability. As a result, these fibers can be subjected to repeated cleaning and autoclaving without impairing the quality of their light transmission.
SCHOTT’s environmentally friendly production process for its lead-free PURAVIS glass fibers does not require the use of either arsenic or antimony. The PURAVIS fibers currently meet RoHS regulation requirements, and once RoHS product exemptions expire, the fibers will continue to satisfy RoHS mandates due to their lead-free processing. By eliminating toxic heavy metals in the PURAVIS manufacturing process, SCHOTT continues its commitment to environmental protection.
