Components Enabling Biotechnology Research

Schott Lighting and Imaging provides critical, multi-fiber components to the healthcare industry for high throughput methods of molecular diagnostics. These components are used in genomics, proteomics, drug discovery and micro-fluidic systems.

The glass processing technology developed by Schott for these components is based on over 20 years of experience in the manufacturing of high resolution imaging components for military night vision, x-ray, industrial and scientific imaging applications.

Design Features:

  • Extremely high number of optical elements and reaction sites
  • Interference free separation of reaction sites via microwells or capillaries
  • Superior readout of individual optical channels using fiber optic technology
  • Chemically inert materials
  • Low background fluorescence
  • Allows for high sensitivity and repeatability
  • Customized materials and dimensional parameters

Fiber Optic Faceplate
Fiber Optic Faceplate: An array of optical fibers that transmits a highly coherent image from the input surface to the output surface. Available designs:
- Up to 150mm diameter (or square)
- Fiber diameters/well size >2.5µm (> 120lp/mm resolution)
- Numerical Aperture; <1.0 typ., (tailored for app.)
- Thermally stable, broad spectral response

Intagliated Fiber Optic Faceplate

Intagliated Fiber Optic Faceplate: A fiber optic faceplate where the individual fiber cores have been etched to create a micro indentation or well. Available designs:
- (same as the Fiber Optic Faceplate with added features)
- Flat bottom wells
- Round and square well configurations available - Materials can be coated

Capillary Array
Capillary Arrays in linear and plate format:
An array of hollow capillaries (tubes) that extend uniformly through the entire plate thickness. Available designs:
- Up to 150mm diameter or square formats
- Capillary ID > 10µm
- Plate Thickness, typically 40:1 aspect ratio, (thick. to ID)

Hydrogen Blackened Capillary Array
Hydrogen Blackened Capillary Array: An array of hollow capillaries (tubes) that extend uniformly thru the entire plate thickness. Available designs:
- (same as the Capillary Array with added features)
- Capillary to capillary optical isolation
- Enhanced contrast for imaging

Hollow Drawn Capillary Array
Hollow Drawn Capillary Array: A small diameter, long length bundle of hollow fibers fused together to form an array. These capillary holes extend uniformly through the entire length of the conduit. Available designs:
- Typically up to 1 meter in length and 20mm in diameter
- Fiber diameters/well size >10µm
- Ideal for light, gas or fluid transport

Fiber Optic Image Conduit and Clad Rod
Fiber Optic Image Conduit and Clad Rod: : A small diameter, long length array of fibers (or a single element) that transmits an image or light from the input surface to the output surface. Available designs:
- Up to 1 meter in length and 20mm in diameter
- Fiber diameters/well size >2.5µm
- Numerical Aperture; (tailored for application or wavelength)
