Leached Image Bundles

Leached Fiber Optic Image Bundles...

Fiber Optic Image Transfer

Application:

The leached image bundles are developed for the primary application of fiber optic endoscopes. The endoscopes are used in the medical, industrial or veterinary market.

Technology

SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging' leached image bundles are fused multifiber rods comprised of a large number of clad glass fiber elements. The primary cladding is an acid resistant glass of relatively low refractive index. The secondary cladding is an acid soluble glass and acts as a bonding agent for the individually clad elements.

Image bundles are produced from two or more drawing processes. The multifiber rods are cut to the desired length and the ends optically polished. The image bundle is subjected to an acid bath which leaches away the secondary cladding. This process removes the bonding of the individual elements and produces a high degree of flexibility between the protected ends. This manufacturing method produces an optical component containing several thousand precisely-aligned, discrete imaging elements.

SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging is pleased to work with you to develop a quality leached fiber optic image bundle for your application. Definitions of terminology will follow.

Overall Length:
The total length of the image bundle in a free state, from image surface to image surface.

Flexible Length:
The length of the flexible portion of the image bundle between the bundle's rigid ends

Rigid Lengths A&B:
The total non-flexible portion of the image bundle on each end. This is required to provide the mounting end tip necessary for the application and a bond length for the sheathing-to-ferrule bond.

End Tip Length:

The exposed portion of the end tip measured from the bundle end to the beginning of the sheathing.

Standard End Tip Material:
Stainless steel. Other materials can be specified by application requirements.

End Tip Diameter (O.D.):
The outer dimension of the metal (stainless steel) end tip assembled to each end.

Thread Wrap:
(Optional) A thread wrapping procedure may be performed to further secure the sheathing on the end tip.

Bundle Format:
Can be round or hexagonal and is determined by the manufacturing process; it is dependent upon the bundle's pixel size/pixel count.

Bundle Size:
The outer diameter (OD) of the image bundle (Round OD or Hexagonal OD image bundles; the maximum OD of the bundle area.)

Fiber Count:
The number of independent imaging fibers within the image bundle. Fiber Size: The dimension of the core and cladding and is nearly equal to the fiber center-to-center distance.

Numerical Aperture (NA):
A fixed value determined by the materials used for the core and cladding glasses. The NA determines the light acceptance angle of the fibers.

Quality Area:
A selected portion of the image size which is recommended as the "active image transfer area" (mask area). The standard quality specification is a maximum of 6 blemishes for the determined quality area of the specific image bundle. A blemish is a broken or gray (half-tone) fiber. A total number of 3 broken fibers are the maximum for the quality specification.
