Balance is the theme of the German Pavilion at the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai that SCHOTT is supporting with ideas and products made of glass. Creating a balance between renewal and preservation, innovation and tradition, and technology and nature has been and will always remain one of our company’s objectives.

We attempt to achieve this balance by developing technologies that tangibly improve people’s living and working conditions. This is why SCHOTT developed a new production method for manufacturing Ceran® glass-ceramic cooktop panels that doesn’t require the toxic heavy metals arsenic and antimony to be used. Manufacturing of black Ceran® cooktop panels has been switched over completely to this environmentally friendly method. And we also set a trend on using eco glass-ceramic in both the kitchen and in household technology. For this, SCHOTT even received the German Innovation Award.
But this isn’t the only award that makes us feel proud. The supermarket chain REWE is using a solar architecture solution with SCHOTT solar cells for its first ”Green Building” that can be operated without producing any CO2 and has been presented with numerous awards for doing so. And the kitchen manufacturer Alno, Bosch Hausgeräte and SCHOTT received the iF and Red Dot Design Awards for the trend study of a kitchen made of glass.
Balance is also the magic word when it comes to many such successes. After all, the challenge is to create links between our own ideas and those that others have and balance them out while working as a team. Let me give you an example: in the lucrative growth market for interior illumination of aircraft cabins , airlines consider us to be a provider of solutions, not just technology, because we think in an application-specific manner and cooperate so closely with designers. Here, too, one thing becomes clear: innovation and progress always result from a mutual tug-of-war – and ultimately coming up with a balanced solution that meets a variety of different demands.
