Dear readers,

Ever since it was first put to technical use in the middle of the 19th century, electrical energy has become essential for virtually all industries. Advances in generating, transporting and storing electrical energy have provided impetus for entire industries. The global trend in favor of renewable energy sources marks a new era and points to a more environmentally friendly future for our energy supply. But regardless of whether it’s yesterday, today or in the future, glass has been and will remain a trailblazer for our electrically-powered world – and it is often less visible than the legendary glass lightbulb.

This is the main message of our cover story. It talks about how glass combines with other materials to perform a crucial sealing function in high-temperature fuel cells, glass-ceramics and glass-to-aluminum seals that play an important role in the innova-
tive batteries of electric cars or glass-ceramics that provide for higher storage density and lower weight in high-performance capacitors.

Glass is known for its incredibly diverse properties and the functions it performs. And it is the know-how that specialized companies like SCHOTT have that constantly unlocks new properties and sets technological milestones to enable our customers to realize their innovations. And not just in the world of energy. Browse through our magazine and you will learn how glass electrifies so many important future fields.

We wish you enjoyable reading.
