Infrared radiators are being used more often to warm restaurant terraces. Lately they are increasingly being equipped with NEXTREMA® glass-ceramic front panels from SCHOTT.
For Frank Buchholz, we have long become part of a fresh air generation. This development can also be attributed to increasingly warm summers. ”People enjoy sitting outside for as long as possible,” says the chef, who opened a gourmet restaurant in Mainz more than ten years ago and has been running the restaurant Das Bootshaus on the shore of the harbor in Mainz since 2011. Many people who are out taking a walk stop by Das Bootshaus, where they can enjoy culinary delights while sitting at sturdy wooden tables. Frank Buchholz sticks to down-to-earth home cooking and uses only products from regional suppliers from Mainz, catfish and walleye from the Rhine that local fishermen bring to him on a regular basis, for example.
”Before, the terrace boomed only in midsummer. But now, people like to sit outside in the fresh air in the spring and fall, and in the evening, even if it is a bit cool,” Buchholz explains. To offer his guests that pleasant feeling of warmth, Buchholz searched a long time for an alternative way to heat his outdoor area. ”Honestly, these commercial gas heaters that are shaped like mushrooms are out of the question. They look awful and are bad for the environment,” he is convinced. Even classic outdoor heaters, which have a better design, are not an option for the top chef. They are difficult to clean and emit not only heat, but also too much disturbing light. ”Our guests want to have warmth, but they don’t want to sit under a spotlight.”

He finally found a solution he liked from MHS Munich Home Systems GmbH, a manufacturer based in Munich, Germany, and purchased his first Heatscope® brand infrared radiator, still a prototype at the time. ”In my kitchen, I place high demands on the products I use. I have the same high standards on choosing my amenities and furniture,” says Buchholz. The design also has to be just right and, last, but not least, I am an environmentally conscious person.” In the meantime, Heatscope® infrared radiators are available in three different versions. One of them is equipped with a NEXTREMA® glass-ceramic front. ”Our high-performance glass-ceramic allows the heat to pass through nearly without any losses and reduces the visible light output,” says Andy Rinaldi, Product Manager at SCHOTT, in explaining the benefits NEXTREMA® offers.
These infrared heaters emit comforting warmth immediately at the press of a button. They are now being increasingly used in outdoor areas: at the Oktoberfest in Munich, at Jamie Oliver’s Italian restaurant, and at Frank Buchholz’s establishment. ”We work with MHS Munich Home Systems GmbH very closely. After all, we are able to offer NEXTREMA® panels in different colors and designs,” Rinaldi adds. Furthermore, it is heat-resistant up to 950 °C and resistant to thermal shocks up to 800 °C. Not even snowflakes can damage the glass-ceramic in a Heatscope® heater when it is switched on.

”We offer so many benefits, such as energy efficiency, ease of cleaning or the transparency of the glass-ceramic for use in LED lighting, for example. You can easily see from the outside whether the spotlight is on or off,”
says Rinaldi. The close cooperation between SCHOTT and MHS Munich Home Systems GmbH extends even further. ”We assist our customer in choosing the right material when it comes to the next product generation or new fields of application,” says Rinaldi.
Frank Buchholz didn’t learn until later that the Heatscope® radiator he uses at his restaurant is equipped with glass-ceramic from SCHOTT. ”That really reassured me because I already appreciate the high quality of CERAN® glass-ceramic cooktop panels in the kitchen. I also know the technology group SCHOTT that is based in Mainz and can be sure that the right experts develop the perfect product for me.” <
