Fascination glass - why glass?
Glass has a wealth of unequalled properties that make it the ideal material for ophthalmic. Whether tinted or clear, nothing is as resistant to scratching or aging as glass; nothing can be worked to such precise tolerances, and nothing stands up so well to everyday use. Photochromic lenses could never have reached their present high standard of performance without glass.
Glass, clear facts in future
Because of SCHOTT Ophthalmic's high quality and extensive range of ophthalmic glass, its blanks are the first choice in many countries of the world for the manufacture of high grade spectacle lenses. The SCHOTT GROUP has established standards for optical glass throughout the world and the group's know-how can be drawn on by both processors and users.
But one point is of top priority for all, from the manufacturer up to the optician: to supply a product to the user enabling an optimum use of one of the most important human sense organs, the eyes.
Glass spectacle lenses - The wide range available
There are mineral glass spectacle lenses for every type of application, to correct shortsightedness and longsightedness, to provide relief in cases of sensitivity to light, for reading in old age, in sunlight and for special vision requirements.
Unsurpassed resistance to scratching
High degree of natural surface hardness, resulting in unsurpassed resistance to scratching and long service life. Costly protective coatings to improve scratch resistance are not necessary.
Superior Optics
No optical material can be worked as well as glass, it is non-deforming and produces good optical surfaces (polishes well). Mineral glasses produce as a rule low color dispersion (Abbe constant) and, therefore, good optical imaging (with no color fringe).
Glass does not deform (bend) when being worked, it is temperature resistant and of a high optical quality.
Thin & Light
Mineral glass lenses obtains the same effect as plastics with a lower center / edge thickness and often even lower weight. Mineral lenses offer the highest index - for a thinner and more cosmetic lens in all powers. Available in 1.5 - 1.9 index.
Refractive indexes higher than n=1.74 cannot be achieved with plastic lenses
Maximum transparency
Mineral glass is "as clear as glass", highly transparent and non-deforming, even after being worn for a long time.
Plastic lenses have a tendency to turbidity and yellowing, this is aggravated under the influence of UV light.
Natural vision - The truth about UV
Sunlight provides nourishment; bodies need sun. Extended UV protection is needed only under extreme conditions. Extreme UV protection (UV 400) gives lenses a yellow cast. People who do not wear glasses are able to lead healthy lives without UV protective glasses.
Glass provides sufficient UV protection for everyday purposes, more is not necessary.
Durability
Mineral glass maintains its properties throughout lenslife.
It does not yellow over time and is a superior base for coatings.
Photochromic performance
Photochromic properties are stable in glass, maintaining changing performance and color consistency throughout lenslife.
Natural raw materials - A high degree of environmental friendliness
Natural raw materials, no waste products (everything is used), no disposal problems.
Raw materials and manufacturing processes used in the manufacture of glass cause no harm to the environment or workers.
