Optical Glass

Product Information

Since Ernst Abbe’s passionate appeal to Otto Schott in 1884 to dedicate himself to the further development of glass on a scientific basis, SCHOTT has been in a continuous process of improving and redeveloping SCHOTT optical glasses and melting processes. New melting processes guarantee economic and therefore market-specific production. New optical glass is primarily used in rapidly growing market-oriented innovations. With the continuous further development of our range we aim to meet future market requirements.

Our latest preferred glasses include about 101 glass types, which cover our customers’ broad range of applications with a large number of different properties. SCHOTT has redeveloped a large number of optical glasses to N glass types, to adjust to the increasingly more stringent environmental requirements. N glass types are free of lead and arsenic.

Applications

Our optical glasses are used in a broad range of applications. We supply both rapidly growing consumer goods markets as well as high-tech industrial optics markets with SCHOTT optical glass.
Several areas of use in which SCHOTT has been well established for decades are given below as an example of the large number of applications:

Consumer goods market applications:
  • Binoculars and spotting scopes
  • 35mm, APS and digital still cameras and video cameras
  • Interchangeable camera lenses
  • Digital projectors

  • High-tech industry applications:
  • Microscopy
  • Medical engineering
  • Laser fusion
  • Geodesy
  • Reprographics
  • Professional image processing

  • Materials

Our optical glasses are divided into glass groups, which include glasses with a similar chemical composition and thus also have a similar optical position. The optical position of the 101 SCHOTT preferred glasses is illustrated in an nd-vd-diagram. Preferred glasses are regularly produced and are therefore available from stock within a few days.

    Forms of Supply

SCHOTT optical glass is available in the following forms of supply:

  • Fine annealed optical glass with up to five non-machined, as-cast surfaces.
  • Cut blanks: According to SCHOTT’s standard or with increased optical and
internal properties and dimensional tolerance requirements.
  • Pressings

  • Specifications

For the majority of applications, the optical and internal properties are decisive and are therefore explicitly specified as follows:

    Optical properties:

  • Refractive index with tolerances
  • Abbe value with tolerances
  • Refractive index homogeneity
  • Internal transmission and color code

  • Internal properties:
  • Striae
  • Bubbles and inclusions
  • Stress birefringence

  • Usually it is sufficient to specify only the optical and internal properties.
However, for some applications the chemical, mechanical or thermal properties might be additionally relevant.

A detailed description of the properties is listed in our technical information and in the “Optical Glass” catalog .

    Quality Assurance

Optical glass is subjected to stringent quality inspection before delivery. All stages of the optical glass production are continuously monitored. Additionally, an elaborate final inspection is performed.
A test certificate in accordance with DIN EN 10204 documents the standard supply quality. Delivery lots are tested for refractive index scattering, stress birefringence, striae and bubbles according to DIN ISO 10110. On request we can also supply test certificates with increased accuracy.
For high homogeneous cut blanks we confirm homogeneity by interferometry.
SCHOTT is certified according to ISO 9001 and 14001 and fulfills thereby today’s requirements for an innovative partner.
