PDA Annual Meeting: SCHOTT Presents TopPac Syringe System for Highly Viscous Drugs
Optimized syringe barrel with ultra-thin wall needles reduce injection force to improve patient comfort.
SCHOTT today showcased its TopPac syringe system for highly viscous drugs at the PDA Annual Meeting. The system’s optimized design attains maximum injection comfort and is especially suitable for applications with hyaluronic acid. It reduces injection force and allows for more accurate drug application. SCHOTT TopPac® is on display at the PDA Annual Meeting in San Antonio from April 7 to 9, 2014 at booth #702.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural, biodegradable substance that treats certain medical disorders, and is commonly used in cosmetic surgery. The injectable form of hyaluronic acid is primarily administered in pre-filled syringes for three medical applications: Cataract surgeries, during which the substance is injected to expand the anterior chamber of the eyeball; osteoarthritis, for which hyaluronic acid lubricates joints during movement; and as a dermal filler, when the acid is injected into the skin to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and scars. However, due to its high viscosity, hyaluronic acid requires a greater amount of pressure to inject the substance than a typical syringe-based medication. This can cause discomfort for both patients and healthcare workers.
SCHOTT TopPac offers a solution to the challenge of injecting hyaluronic acid with pre-filled syringes. The syringe barrel is treated with cross-linked silicone for consistent gliding forces to reduce injection force. This allows for more accurate drug administration. The integrated luer lock offers a tight needle connection even with ultra-thin needles (30 / 31 Gauge), avoiding leakage or needle ejection.
The syringes are suitable for terminal sterilization with steam. SCHOTT TopPac is easy to handle, and the cut flange is suitable for external finger grips. SCHOTT manufactures TopPac in a fully integrated, clean-room production environment that ensures low contamination and particle levels without washing. The syringes are supplied in nests and tubs that can integrate into most existing filling lines. The transparency of the cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) raw material used in TopPac PFS also facilitates visual inspections on the filling lines. TopPac syringes can reduce the total cost of ownership for pharmaceutical companies and health care facilities.
