How did you hear about SCHOTT?

I heard about the internship opportunity from the career fair at the University of Tennessee, where I attend school.

How has your education translated into your internship?

Learning how to use excel and SolidWorks effectively at Tennessee has really helped me solve problems and be able to help contribute to the engineering team. I have had many projects where SolidWorks was used and I could easily understand and use the program to complete the tasks asked of me.

What is your typical day like at SCHOTT?

My typical day consist of engineering and production meetings, checking emails and assessing the daily tasks, gathering the necessary data and then finding out what the engineers need of me on that day, I am then free to connect with other employees and actively seek out more work to try and learn as much as I can.

What inspires you to continue in this internship?

This is my first real experience in the engineering world, along with the fact that people truly care about my learning, experience and growth as an engineer makes me want to come to work every day and continue to develop my skillset.

How did you hear about SCHOTT?

Through our career fair, I was able to submit my resume and give a one-minute elevator pitch to Kevin, the SCHOTT representative, at the event.

How has your education translated into your internship?

My education has helped me remember certain equations that I need to use on a daily basis and it gives me a different perspective on problems we encounter. I am able to bridge the gap between theory and production or application thanks to what I have learned at the University of Rochester.

What was one project you found particularly interesting that you have worked on?

I worked with the new melter’s for Chalcogenide glass, which is glass that transmits infrared light but not the normal light spectrum. I was assigned to qualify the use of melter’s and judge their usability for production. I reviewed the process and broke down its parts to try to find spots to increase production and was able to increase production from 1 glass melt to 4 glass melts at a time.

What is your typical day like at SCHOTT?

I usually start out with a 30-minute meeting to plan and organize my day followed by a meeting with my bosses. There we will update each other on what needs to be done and I will get any permissions I need to move forward in my work. Then I was free to go around the plant and seek out my own projects and see who needed my assistance. Having the ability to watch the melts take place was very valuable for my learning because I was able to see the process and talk to the operators about what they did and why they did it.

How did you hear about SCHOTT?

I gathered information online on jobboards that publish job offers from well-known companies for final thesis students. There were many job ads but most of them required being a working student before writing a thesis. I found SCHOTT’s offer about a job at the department Corporate Purchasing on the portal www.praktika.de. I hadn’t heard about the company before sending in my application.

What exactly are your tasks?

My task at SCHOTT linked the theoretical aspects of my paper with the practical work of the company. I was able to apply the things I learned in theory and discussed in my bachelor thesis to my work. This enabled me to create an outcome that constituted a substantial element or the department Corporate Purchasing that now is the basis for further processes.

What were your expectations on the internship and were they met?

I was suprised about the high level of self-responibility that was given to me, which I haven’t been able to experience before at any other company I worked for. I was able to express and transform my ideas at any time and at the same time, I was offered help whenever I didn’t know how to solve a problem. The responsibility that was given to me made it possible to develop and learn a lot. In my opinion, this is an essential reason for the good results of my thesis and also represents SCHOTT’s aspiration to be an innovative company with great ideas.

Could you imagine to apply for an entry position after finishing your studies?

First of all, I would like to mention that I still have the Master’s degree ahead of me. I certainly think about writing my Master Thesis at SCHOTT and if this goes as smoothly as the Bachelor Thesis, I could imagine to apply for an entry position. Long story short: Yes, I could absolutely imagine it fromm y current point of view.

How did you hear about SCHOTT?

Some of my fellow students have already completed an internship at SCHOTT and told me about it. Furthermore, there is no way to not know SCHOTT when studying in Mainz    ;-)

What exactly were your tasks?

My tasks included a variety of projects. First of all, I edited a brochure about the topic „Corporate Pension Scheme“. Furthermore, I created information and communication material (for example training documents) for the worldwide implementation of a new SAP-module. The revision of Intranet and Internet content as well as online researches about different HR relevant topics were also part of my work at SCHOTT.

What were your expectations on the internship and were they met?

I mainly expected to gain practical experiences and be well supervised. Both expectations were more than met and I was absolutely happy about the overall situation. I got to know a lot of processes within the company, especially by being able to attend meetings and workshops on a regular basis. I really enjoyed my internship at SCHOTT and I have learned a lot.

Could you imagine to apply for an entry position after finishing your studies?

Yes, I can definitely imagine to work at SCHOTT, because I consider it to be an attracive employer. Not only the pleasant corporate culture but also the social commitment (for example the Run for Children®) convinced me.
