“That Dr. Fotheringham has been elevated to Fellow of this renowned association stresses his outstanding contribution to glass science and technology,” said SCHOTT research fellow Dr. Roland Langfeld.
Dr. Fotheringham is Senior Principal Scientist in the material development department of SCHOTT. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany.
Joining SCHOTT in 1987 as a Ph.D. student, Dr. Fotheringham developed a theory for single-mode communication fibers. He developed the theory of “active thermal conductivity” as well as novel hot forming and annealing processes. His current research interests include non-equilibrium thermodynamics, structure-property relationships, and material modeling in inorganic glass.
His published work includes 20 granted patents and over 40 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers. In addition, he is Deputy Chair of the Technical Committee I of the “Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft”.
