Global pharmaceutical packaging specialist SCHOTT announces its enhanced production setup for coated vials. Due to a growing number of highly sensitive parenteral drugs requiring special packaging solutions, interest in vials with inner coatings is steadily on the rise. To meet this demand, SCHOTT offers vials with a particularly inert inner surface or special surface properties for lyophilization. SCHOTT has over 20 years of coating experience, and this know-how was taken to develop  new coating capabilities. SCHOTT’s new production environment is fully automated, strictly avoids glass-to-glass contact, and focuses on the reduction of particle load.

Creating a chemically stable inner container surface is an ongoing quest for pharmaceutical packaging manufacturers. “Quartz coatings offer a great way to combine well-know, highly processable Borosilicate glass with the pureness of SiO2 (silicon dioxide), creating a very homogeneous surface”, said Florence Buscke, the company’s Global Product Manager for Vials & Coatings. “This enables us to create a functional barrier to minimize drug and container interaction.” SCHOTT Type I plus® vials with a quartz-like inner surface are available in sizes ranging from 2 to 100 milliliters. They ensure that the formulation remains stable over its shelf life by reducing ion leaching and protein adsorption. Furthermore, pharma companies can avoid a pH-shift for unbuffered formulations when using SCHOTT Type I plus®.

Lyophilization is a second area where coated vials can demonstrate a clear advantage. SCHOTT TopLyo® vials are provided with a hydrophobic inner layer. This ensures that liquid residues are drawn together to form larger drops, similar to the so-called lotus effect. The result: a compact and aesthetic lyo cake as well as less fogging at the container walls. As a further advantage, the hydrophobic layer also enables easier emptying and leaves less residual volume after reconstitution, which reduces the need for overfilling. Lastly, SCHOTT TopLyo® vials avoids any residual silicone due to its silicone-free coating technique.

SCHOTT’s high-quality coated vials meet particularly tight dimensional and cosmetic parameters and are 100% camera inspected. The company continues to investment in the development of functional coatings to further enhance its product portfolio.
