More comfortable homes, more efficient fires: New glass-ceramic coating upgrades fireplaces and woodstoves
Fireplaces keep rooms warm and cozy—until they get too hot. Now homeowners can enjoy a fire without overheating using SCHOTT ROBAX® IR Max. The coating can reflect a large portion of heat radiation back into the combustion chamber, significantly reducing the heat that escapes. This effectiveness never diminishes, contributing to highly efficient, low-emission combustion. SCHOTT will present this new development at the HPBExpo in Atlanta from March 2-4, 2017 (Booth 1225).
Watching the dancing flames of fireplaces and stoves shouldn’t leave anyone dripping in sweat as soon as the heat builds up. This is a common occurrence in low-energy and passive houses, for example, which have high thermal insulation. Everything near the fireplace –furniture, carpet, curtains, and people – can get uncomfortably warm when the heat turns up.
ROBAX® IR Max prevents this by reflecting up to seven times more heat radiation back into the combustion chamber than uncoated fire viewing panels. As a result, not only does less heat escape, but the higher temperatures inside the fireplace or stove also contribute to better combustion, lowering emissions. Fuel can be used optimally and heating costs reduced. The additional energy can also heat water or be stored.
Extremely durable and easy to clean
ROBAX® IR Max offers longevity that is second to none. Throughout intensive testing, the coating retained its reflective properties, remaining stable and functioning even under continuous exposure to 1,202 degrees Fahrenheit (650 degrees Celsius) temperatures. This leads to further advantages: Higher temperatures in the combustion chamber can mean fewer soot deposits on the glass-ceramic viewing panel and easier cleaning.

The new development offers even more convincing arguments for fireplace and stove manufacturers: Lower wall and floor temperatures enable more design freedom, particularly with regard to the depth of the heating chamber and the size of the fire viewing panel. Even multi-sided glazed fireplaces can now be closer to walls and furniture. But above all, fireplace lovers can scooch back onto the sofa now that ROBAX® IR Max makes warmth stay cozy.
