Algae harvesting kicks off!

In the Austrian spring sun, green algae have been thriving for a few months – and are yielding initial returns. Europe’s largest vertical plant for the cultivation of microalgae has started work. Operator ecoduna wants to win about 100 tons of dry biomass annually.

With an area of 10,000 square meters, the giant greenhouse in Bruck an der Leitha is the first one of the former startups in an industrial-scale. Inside, a total of 43,000 DURAN® glass tubes, 7,000 manifolds and 86,000 composites form a vertical reactor system. If you put all the tubes together, they would cover a distance of 230 kilometers, which is about the length of Austria. Accordingly, they offer plenty of space for algae strains: four species, i.a. Spirulina and Chlorella are cultivated here depending on the season. Due to their material properties, the high-quality glass tubes from SCHOTT optimize the growth of algae and thus serve as a source of revenue for industrial production.
