Big data and artificial intelligence: how glass production is becoming “smart”

Melting tanks that reach temperatures of around 1,600 degrees Celsius are at the core of glass production. With a view to the factory of the future, SCHOTT is working continuously on utilizing the huge volumes of data that the sensors on these melting tanks record. The goal is to use machine learning tools, i. e. big data and artificial intelligence, to gain knowledge and automatically implement it in better processes and products. Moreover, hi-res cameras and intelligent image processing provide information from inside the tanks that was previously inaccessible. For the subsequent processing steps, SCHOTT is developing a smart factory standard model that features a fully automated and connected production process for glass and glass-ceramics.

At SCHOTT, digital transformation also enables new approaches in R&D, sales and service. The company has offered web-based ordering and service platforms for quite some time, for example, for optical glasses and glass tubes. “In the future, we want to tailor our offers to our customers’ needs even more individually with the possibilities that digitization provides,” says Dr. Frank Heinricht, Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG.
