The SCHOTT® Jade Reading Light was among the top three of the Crystal Cabin Award 2020 in the category “Materials and Components” on March 30, 2021. Available since 2007, the Crystal Cabin Award is considered the most prestigious award in the aviation industry today. Jade has already received the German Design Award 2021 in the category “Excellent Product Design – Aviation, Maritime and Railway”.

We spoke with the team at SCHOTT Aviation and the design house PriestmanGoode, who worked together to develop the Jade light.

“Jade is unique: the first aircraft reading light made of glass that can be intuitively operated via a touch screen,” says Philip Fischer, Head of SCHOTT Aviation. Jade creates a pleasant atmosphere with its warm, white light. The brightness of the light can be adjusted individually and even when the seat position is changed, the light beam automatically follows the seat. “Our latest groundbreaking innovation is the result of a great collaboration with the designer PriestmanGoode. Being a finalist of the Crystal Cabin Award is a fantastic achievement and recognition! I’d like to thank everyone who was part of the development and marketing of the product.”

Ben Rowan, Director of PriestmanGoode, adds: “Reaching the final stages of the Crystal Cabin Award is a significant achievement and testament to the value of our collaborative approach on this project. With the SCHOTT experts on our side, we were able to create a new product that combines SCHOTT’s expertise in specialty glass technology, and PriestmanGoode’s expertise in designing user-focused, bespoke products that are tailored to enhance the passenger experience. Congratulations to both teams on reaching this important milestone.”

Yvonne Winter, Product Manager Jade and Sales Manager Aviation at SCHOTT, is also pleased to have made it to the finals. She is very proud and excited that Jade has received a positive response even during the difficult situation in the aviation industry caused by the Corona pandemic. “We launched Jade in April 2020 and have already won a first project with an international five stars airline,” she adds.

The Jade Reading Light follows the spirit of the founding fathers Otto Schott, Carl Zeiss and Ernst Abbe. Since they founded SCHOTT in 1884, the engineers and scientists have always pushed the boundaries of innovation to the next level and made the impossible possible. “Jade is typical for SCHOTT,” says Dr. Bernd Wölfing, Head of Product Development LED. “The product combines the core competences of our Lighting and Imaging business unit, as we have used our many years of expertise to combine fiber optics and LED technology. Jade is powered by white LEDs that are discreetly hidden under the glass cover, while fiber optic light guides transport the light.”

Due to COVID-19, the ceremony of the Crystal Cabin Award 2020 did not take place at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) last year, but was postponed to this year. Philip Fischer and Yvonne Winter presented the product’s features and benefits in a lively online pitch.
