Glass has a firm place in the design world – and in the kitchen as well. SCHOTT is now going one step further by combining the advantages of this versatile material with the high-quality appearance of stainless steel.
With Metal- Look, SCHOTT has developed another new design option that demonstrates the great versatility of glass. The surface looks amazingly similar to brushed stainless steel.
However, closer inspection reveals that the material is a pure glass solution through which the metallic look shimmers elegantly. No metal parts have been used to achieve this look.
Stainless steel appearance is not the only advantage that the innovative design solution offers.
The process enables different color variations and effects as well as the application of very fine, complex logos and graphics, lines or symbols. In addition, transparent surfaces on the glass can be combined with metallic shimmering areas.
SCHOTT MetalLook supports the integration of displays and operating elements. Haier, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of home appliances headquartered in Qingdao, China, provides an example of how Metal- Look can be adapted. “We were looking for new possibilities for a superior metallic look that would enable us to aesthetically differentiate our product line across all kitchen appliances,” explains Xue Guangdong, Head of Haier Kitchen Appliances Overseas. “We were very impressed by SCHOTT MetalLook – not only by the design options and its noble and innovative look, but also by its processability and durability.”
Thanks to its high heat resistance, the printed special glass is particularly well suited for ovens and gas cooktops. Both its heat resistance and its chemical resistance have been confirmed in various product tests conducted in the laboratory. This allowed Haier to design a complete product line with the innovative solution, from baking and steam oven to extractor hood and coffee machine.
There is also an induction hob with SCHOTT CERAN®, a special feature because SCHOTT was able to develop a matching design with the same metallic look for the two materials flat glass and glass-ceramic. This gave the appliance family a consistent look and feel which supports the trend towards the so-called Family Design in the kitchen.
