Tubular glass has a crucial role in a large variety of sensor applications. The different measurement principles rely on different unique features of glass and the tubular geometry. In the following, some selected uses are presented from the different areas of electromechanical, thermal, magnetic, radiation and electroanalytical sensing:

In the field of electromechanical sensors an example is the Pressure Sensor and as the name says it can be used to guide and detect pressure. A round geometry is ideal to resist pressure, heavy wall capillaries from DURAN® are a good option for this.

Thermal Sensors are a large group of sensing devices. A sprinkler can also be considered as a temperature sensor, because of the glass that breaks when it reaches a certain temperature. Of course, sprinklers do a lot more. The special dimensional requirements which are necessary to make such devices are a specialty of SCHOTT Tubing.

Magnetic sensors can also benefit from a tubular glass housing. Switches that are sensitive to magnetic fields can also be encapsulated in glass tubes. Often a glass to metal seal is used to provide a gas tight, hermetic encapsulation of the electronics.

Radiation Sensors are an obvious application for glass, due to its transparency. The various interesting parts of the electro-magnetic spectrum each require specialised sensors and glasses or filter glasses, for example the UV-Sensor. UV-C transmissive Glass 8337B is used as a housing for sensors of UV light. 8337B can be used to achieve a glass to metal seal that is very tight and protects sensitive electronics for a long period of time.

Additionally Fibre Optic sensors are a class of optical sensors. Tube glasses are an essential part of fibre optics, enabling a total internal reflection. Multiple glass types like 8250 are available.
Similarly, to a fibre optic a liquid level sensor works the same. Glass rods with an especially high capability to guide and transmit light are achieved by specialized processes at SCHOTT Tubing  e.g. in glass 8347.
Photomultipliers are a classic detector for radiation of a wide spectral range. Vacuum tubes like those used for photomultipliers are sealed in a gas tight manner by special glasses such as SCHOTT 8245 or 8250. These glasses can be the housing of the vacuum chamber that transmits the desired photons for amplification and detection. SCHOTT 8245 is a special low background noise glass composition.

Finally Electroanalytical Sensors also rely on glass components, for example the pH electrode. A glass with high electrical resistance is needed to contain reference electrodes and enable a stable seal with the pH sensitive membrane glass. All requirements can be fulfilled with SCHOTT 8366.
In addition, other chemical Sensors such as gas sensors use glass as a stable barrier against all major environmental impacts and can protect sensitive chemicals for the intended use over a long period of time, even light protection is possible with glasses such as Illax®.
