SCHOTT investing to triple production of pharmaceutical polymer containers

Global demand for specialized drug delivery devices driving new investments worth several hundred million euros at existing facility in Müllheim, Germany.

Global pharmaceutical systems specialist SCHOTT is again increasing its production capacity for ready-to-use polymer syringes and individualized containers. To meet the high market demand, the company will invest a nine-figure sum to add a new production plant at its existing site in Müllheim, Germany. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021 with a significant increase in production expected to begin in 2022. The investment also includes a pilot center, allowing for rapid prototyping of packaging innovations.
The expansion is the result of the growing demand globally for prefillable sterile polymer syringes used for emergency drugs, intravenous therapies, and highly viscous medications. New market segments, such as cancer therapy or highly sensitive biologics, which are often dispensed using specialized, pre-filled devices, are further creating need for increased production. Those specialized drug delivery devices require individualized packaging, which has resulted in a need for new packaging solutions. SCHOTT markets these prefillable, sterile polymer syringes under the brand name SCHOTT TopPac®.

“The investment is part of our global growth strategy to further strengthen our position as a leading pharmaceutical packaging supplier both in the region and globally,” says Dr. Frank Heinricht, Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT. “This includes capacity expansion for polymer syringes at the Swiss competence center in St. Gallen, which recently saw a number of investments to add another 50 percent to its existing capacity.

Andreas Reisse, Head of Business Unit Pharmaceutical Systems at SCHOTT adds, “The new production plant will allow us to meet the needs of drug manufacturers who require pharmaceutical packaging made of high-end polymer. It will feature state-of-the-art production lines in combination with fully automated technology and equipped with the latest cleanroom technology.”
