Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer, Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG.

Dear readers,

Today, more than ever before, glass creates the link between people and technology. This fascinating material performs key functions in nearly all areas of life. This became quite evident at glasstec 2012, the leading international trade fair on glass. SCHOTT unveiled remarkable innovations at this event, for example a Wall System and a Glass Wall that provide glass solutions for high-quality interior design. Or the world’s hardest cover glass Xensation® Cover for use in the displays of smartphones from well-known brand manufacturers. But also the glass-ceramic NEXTREMA™, a high-tech material withexceptional properties.

Examples like these show that futuristic architecture, communication, mobility, health and energy generation would be inconceivable without glass. Thanks to our R&D network that consists of more than 600 global experts, we are able to fully utilize this material. Because we are one of the companies that conduct the most research in the area of glass and glass technology, we are successful with developments like the thinnest glass from the role or advanced manufacturing of nanostructures on glass surfaces . The fact that SCHOTT participates in so many groundbreaking R&D initiatives can be seen in the Otto Schott Research Award we have been presenting for many years and the active role we play in a funded research project on developing battery technology for the electric vehicles of the future .

R&D-based innovation is and will remain our main driver. This can be seen in the fact that new products account for over 30 percent of our sales. This is but one of the reasons why we are also the market and innovation leader on receivers for solar power plants and have already manufactured one million of them. There are currently around 60 of these plants in total and many more are either under construction or planned. Clean electricity from these power plants is even to be exported to Europe in the future. One initial reference project from the electricity from the desert project ”Desertec” is already planned in Morocco next year. And SCHOTT is actively involved in realizing the Desertec vision.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition!

Sincerely Yours,
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer
